Billabong Pipe Masters Day 1

E’ partito in condizioni eccellenti il Billabong Pipe Masters in memoria di Andy Irons sulla North Shore di Oahu, finalissima del campionato del mondo che vede ancora in gara per il titolo Mick Fanning e Kelly Slater, unici due rimasti nella corsa al trofeo più prestigioso.

La giornata è cominciata con onde di 6-8 piedi destre e sinistre tra Backdoor e Pipeline per arrivare fino al completamento dei primi due round, con i migliori surfisti al mondo che hanno dato vero spettacolo nei tubi cavi e profondi di uno degli spot più pericolosi e temuti al mondo. Pericolosità che è stata subito sottolineata fin dalle prime heat con l’incidente occorso a Kieren Perrow, dislocatosi una spalla  in seguito a un rovinoso wipeout.

Gabriel Medina è stato senza dubbio tra quelli che hanno dato più spettacolo, aprendo la sua heat con un raro tubone aperto sulla sinistra di Pipeline su cui ha preso un 9.67 che poi ha suggellato sempre sulla sinistra con un 9.0 eliminando Bruce Irons dal main event. La seconda onda di Medina, che dopo il tubo ha chiuso con un alley-oop, lo mette anche in corsa per il premio Airshow di 250.000 miglia offerto dall’Hawaian Airlines.

Anche l’hawaiano Sebastian Zietz, campione in carica della Triple Crown, ha aperto la sua campagna in difesa del titolo con una delle migliori prestazioni, guadagnando il primo perfect 10 del Pipe Masters, grazie a un tubo profondo a Backdoor.

La prematura eliminazione di Ezekiel Lau nel primo round invece apre la strada per la corsa alla Triple Crown agli altri contendenti Michel Bourez, Frederick Patacchia e Jeremy Flores.
