Alcuni giorni fa sul popolare sito baliwaves.com è stato pubblicato il report di un attacco di squali a un surfista in uno spot di Bali. L’attacco sarebbe il primo mai registrato nella storia dell’isola.

Il report è stato pubblicato da Slim, il gestore del sito balinese, il quale è stato contattato via email dalla vittima dell’attacco, un surfista australiano che è voluto rimanere anonimo. Visto che nessun’altro report era reperibile in rete, Slim ha approfondito le ricerche e a quanto pare l’attacco è realmente accaduto, come ha poi confermato nell’ultimo report di pochi giorni fa.
L’attacco sarebbe avvenuto domenica 14 novembre in uno spot di Balian alla foce di un fiume. Dopo un’intensa pioggia l’acqua era molto sporca e nessuno dei surfisti voleva entrare, principalmente per il timore di prendere un’infezione all’orecchio.
Il primo ad entrare in acqua è stato il surfista poi vittima dell’attacco. Altri surfisti hanno poi raccontato di aver visto il muso dello squalo afferrare la mano della vittima riducendola in brandelli. Lo sfortunato surfista ha raggiunto poi la riva dopo una remata interminabile contro corrente durata 20 minuti ed è stato portato in ospedale. L’operazione è durata 4 ore e ha richiesto 100 punti per riattaccare la mano e 3 tendini. I medici hanno detto che il surfer riuscirà a riacquisire completa sensibilità alla mano nell’arco di sei mesi.
Slim ha confermato che si tratta del primo attacco di squalo mai sentito a Bali in tutta la sua vita, mentre la vittima ha confermato che ciò non lo fermerà dal tornare a surfare. Ha dichiarato invece che la prossima volta di penserà due volte se si tratta di una session dopo piogge pesanti e l’acqua torbida.

“Just thought I’d write and set the record straight Everything you’ve got written down seems pretty accurate, except for the 6 months with no feeling in my hand. I was told by a surgeon in Bali that it might be 6 months before I have feeling in my thumb – the rest of the hand is fine. Also the 20 minute paddle, I don’t know if it was that long, but
it felt that long (well it felt longer) as I had 2 choices – paddle back through a rip, or paddle out again and around the rip. I obviously did not want to head towards the area where the bite had come from, so went through the rip, which was a pain in the arse.”
“In regards to the bite, I did not see the shark. I heard secondhand that another surfer saw the nose come out of the water and grab my hand, but did not speak to him myself. It was actually after a huge downpour of rain and the water was filthy. It seemed like no one wanted to paddle out, I assume due to all the floating debris in the water and risk of ear infection. I was the first to paddle out, thinking the worst I would get
would be an ear infection or snag a fin on a log. In hindsight, with all the backwash from the river, the water was probably so dirty and visibility so bad that the shark mistook my hand for a fish. It bit and let go straight away, which I am very thankful for, but even then the hand was a bit of a mess when I pulled it out of the water. I also believe it was probably not an overly large shark, or I would be missing a thumb as
it would have bitten straight through the phalange bones in my thumb.”
“Just one of these things that happens. I think you’re right in that it won’t stop people surfing at Balian – nor should it. I personally would think twice about surfing after heavy rains and the waters get really brown though.”

io ho surfato con a balian con dei brasiliani nel 2006 ed è famoso per essere un dei posti a bali con più presenza di squali anche perchè si trova alla foce di un fiume.
